Why Northridge?

“There is an intellectual challenge with motivation, discipline with sincere interest in the boy, the teaching of truth rather than opinion and fancy, and the wonderful example set by the faculty. These are the ingredients necessary to teach boys to use their freedom well.”

– Heide Kenny, mother of Michael ’94, Chistopher ’95, and Daniel ‘03

“When I came to NRP, I did not know what to expect. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made. Northridge has helped me out both spiritually and academically – two things I could not put a price on. I owe a great deal to Northridge and would like to pay back the school any way I can.”

– Rory Fanning ’95; Notre Dame ‘00

“In real terms, my education cannot be measured by what I remember. I did retain something which no one can take away from me: an ability to know the three essentials. First, who I am and who God is. Second, what I am destined for. And finally, how I am going to get there.”

– Joe McCormack ’84; Loyola ‘88

"Northridge Prep is a parent's true ally in the task of raising their boys to be men of substance and depth."

- Liz Rahimi, mother of Ben ’08, David ’10, Nick ’12, and John ‘15

"It was October 15 of 1981, six weeks into the school year, and I was the new kid at Northridge Prep in Niles, Illinois. That day was my first day of classes as a NRP high school freshman.

Why did I leave that previous school, and why was I walking down the halls of Northridge on that sunny October day? At the previous school, I was playing on one of the athletic teams, was doing well academically, and was getting to know the kids around me. To the casual observer, there would have been no apparent problem. Yet there was a problem: I was uncomfortable, I was not enjoying school, and I was not happy. I wanted a change. I looked to Northridge and saw an answer to my problem.

Why Northridge? What did Northridge have that the previous school did not? What made Northridge so special? As I think back, the answer was quite simple. The choice was not based on test scores, college acceptances, athletic programs, extracurricular programs, percent of teachers with PhDs, or student to teacher ratios.

No, I was a kid back then, and had a different perspective. My reason for going to Northridge – for going back to Northridge - was for the people, for the friends that I had left behind. I had left Northridge after 8th grade to pursue athletic and academic programs that could only be realized at one of the larger local high schools.

Twenty-five years later, I have two high school age sons. The local high school has one of the best academic, athletic, and extracurricular records in the county. It’s close, and it’s free. So why send my sons to Northridge?

The decision for me is easy. I revert back to the simple logic of a fourteen year old. For me, the answer is found in the people - the students, the teachers, the families, and the friends.
